Speelschare | Info | Biography | English Version
The “Speelschare” is a group of young musicians, living in and around Diksmuide. The orchestra was founded in 1980 by Gino Malfait, who was at that moment music teacher at the Sint-Aloysius High School in Diksmuide. Until today, he has been the manager of the group.
The key motive from the start has remained the same over the years, namely to give all the youngsters the opportunity to experience the unique feeling of making music together.
As a musical youth movement, the Speelschare can’t be defined as a brass band or a band, because all instruments get a chance. In this way, the orchestra also has a number of violinists and guitarists.
The Speelschare has weekly rehearsals on Sunday morning. The repertoire is varied and contains, next to transcriptions of pop and rock music, classical inspired works as well as jazz arrangements.
The purpose of the orchestra is to work dynamically with a young spirit. To achieve this, the young musicians have various performances throughout the year. No doubt, the concert trip at the beginning of the summer holidays, is the crowning of the year. In this way, the Speelschare has already been the guest of Germany, England, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Sicily, Portugal and Ireland.
